Cape Fear Rotary Provides Christmas for 56 Children

December 2013

Cape Fear Rotary provided Christmas for 25 families for a total of 56 children this past December totaling $7,081. Families were told to meet at a designated time in the snack area of Target for a little help with Christmas but did not realize it would cover everything. Each family was told about Rotary, then given a calculator and given a dollar amount to spend. When the family reached the designated dollar amount, they then returned to the snack area and a Rotarian would go through the line with the family and pay for the Christmas.

The money raised by Cape Fear Rotary’s Annual Golf Tournament held each May enables the club to fund special projects such as this along with pledges from Cape Fear Rotary members.

Cape Fear Rotary meets Friday mornings at 7:30 am at Jungle Rapids on Oleander Drive.

Member Visits Strasbourg, France

AUGUST 2013

Wilmington Cape Fear Rotary recently had one of its members, Randy Reeves, visit Strasbourg France. His visit was for vacation but included time with members from the Strasbourg Rotary (100 members). Both clubs exchanged flags and discussed the world-wide impact of Rotary and its influence on the local Rotary programs. Many of the Strasbourg Rotarians have exchanged summer students with Rotarians from the Cape Fear Rotary Club over the last 8 years. Randy's son, Kyle, spent one month this summer in the Strasbourg area and visited Paris, Nice, Monaco, and Baden-Baden Germany, while improving his French language and cultural learning. These programs help broaden our international exposure and create life-long friendships for our members and their families.

Cape Fear Rotary Raises Over $30k!

At this year’s Cape Fear Rotary Golf Tournament fundraiser we raised over $30,000 for the causes we support throughout the year. We had a fantastic turnout where 123 golfers competed on a gorgeous day at Porters Neck Country.

A hearty thank you to everyone that contributed to the fundraiser from the sponsors and players to the volunteers and vendors that helped make this year’s event a huge success.

Wilmington Cape Fear Rotary Club Endows Scholarship Fund for CFCC Students

The Cape Fear Rotary Club has established a $30,000 endowed scholarship fund that will provide financial support to Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) students. The scholarship will benefit students with financial need who have attended New Hanover County high schools. Scholarship applicants must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, and the recipient will be selected by the Cape Fear Rotary Club scholarship committee in consultation with the CFCC Foundation office.

The CFCC Foundation is proud to partner with the Wilmington Cape Fear Rotary Club who have generously supported CFCC students since 1997. The rotary club has previously donated over $65,000 in annual scholarships at CFCC, and has given over $600,000 in the past 23 years to worthy causes in the Wilmington area.

“Cape Fear Rotary has been a long-term supporter of Cape Fear Community College. Four of our members are past presidents of the Cape Fear Community College Board of Trustees. We have financed two scholarships for many years, “says David Sweyer, current club president, “and three years ago our board agreed to an endowment of $30,000 which we recently completed payment. The endowment is to provide scholarships for needy students, hopefully forever.”

Cape Fear Rotary Club provides a way for local business leaders to give back to their community through fundraising and community service. Rotary is the world’s first service organization, dating back to 1905. The organizations motto is, “Service Above Self.” There are currently over 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide.
